Dealing with Difficulty

August 29th, 2009

I took Adam to a picnic at Harmony House (a misnomer, if there ever was one). This is the DHR owned place where foster parents bring the children, so that biological parents can interact with them. Usually the house is reserved for one family, but today was more of an “open house” event. Multiple families and social workers were there.

And, of course, Adam’s parent made a bit of a power play. But he and I had talked before we got there and he handled everything like a pro (no provoked outbursts like last time) despite his parents attempts.

For example, he didn’t even tantrum when the mom yelled at him to come away from the road (like most autistic kids, loud voices set him off). They had been sitting together eating lunch and he darted away to watch a truck drive away from the construction site next door. Since she appeared unwilling to get of her (lazy, stupid) ass, I walked over to get him and he complied.

Needless to say, he got hugs and ice cream after this ordeal.
